Weeds are literally a growing problem in Australia. NGINA is being proactive in the prevention of the spread of those plants that might have a negative social, economic or environmental impact. All members of the industry should keep updated on which plants are now either considered or declared as invasive weeds.
It is difficult to make an exact list of invasive plants that retailers and producers should be concerned about as different regions of NSW and ACT can have different plants listed as weeds. It is recommended that members should stop growing and selling the plants on the following lists:
- Weeds of National Significance (WoNS) — these are considered the worst environmental weeds in Australia because of their invasiveness, potential for spread, and economic and environmental impacts.. The WoNS list can be found on Weeds Australia.
- State Priority Weeds — these are weeds declared by the NSW government as illegal for sale. Restrictions apply to all parts of the plant, and to cultivars and hybrids. The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) list of NSW weeds can be viewed by here. If you buy or sell state priority weeds in NSW you are committing an offence under the Biosecurity Act 2015. The plants will be seized and destroyed and you could be fined. The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) list of NSW weeds can be viewed here. For information on weed management in the ACT read this.
- Regional Priority Weeds should not be bought, sold or moved in certain regions of NSW. You have a general biosecurity duty to prevent, eliminate or minimise the biosecurity risks from regional priority weeds, as far as is reasonably practicable. If you buy, sell or move regional priority weeds without preventing, eliminating or minimising the risks you may be committing an offence under the Biosecurity Act 2015. You could be fined and the plants could be seized and destroyed.
